Police are asking for the public's help in identifying this child found dead at a Lake Lavon park April 15.

At a press conference at Children’s Advocacy Center of Collin County Friday morning, Det. Venece Perepiczka of Wylie PD presented a photograph of the boy found dead on Skyview Dr. April 15 and asked for the public’s help in identifying the body.

“We’re asking for your help in starting the process,” she said.

The photograph was taken of the child and enhanced for public distribution. Perepiczka said he is now believed to be 6 years of age, with brown hair and brown eyes, 39 inches tall. His weight is 28 pounds.

Perepiczka said the child had “significant medical needs” and it appeared that he had been fed through a feeding tube.

She said it appears, preliminarily, that he was only in the location, across the street from a park near Lake Lavon, for 24 hours.

Perepiczka said WPD is working with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children; it was that organization that provided the distributed version of the photograph.

The police would not comment on whether the boy was clothed or not when discovered, but they did confirm that he was not wearing the clothing depicted in the photograph.

A cause of death has not yet determined, but Perepiczka said there was “no obvious trauma to the body.”

Perepiczka said WPD received a 911 call when a lawn mowing service discovered the body at approximately 9 a.m. Thursday morning.

She said Wylie PD is working with the Collin County Task Force to interview in-home and other child care providers to see if anyone knows anything about the boy, who obviously had “special needs.”

The task force is comprised of local police departments, working in conjunction with the Children’s Advocacy Center. The center’s executive director, Lynne McLean, said a “multi-disciplinary collaborate approach by professionals” is being used to seek more information about the child and who he is. She said it was “horrifyingly tragic” and unusual for a child to be discovered with no clue as to his identity.

Anyone with information about the boy is asked to call 1-800-THE LOST or 1-800-843-5678.

Boy found near Wylie pond identified; grandmother arrested

12:12 AM CDT on Saturday, April 24, 2010

After eight days, he has a name: Gerren Joseph Isgrigg.

Late Friday, Wylie investigators confirmed the identity of the 6-year-old whose body was found by a mowing crew April 15 near a Collin County pond.

Gerren's maternal grandmother and primary caregiver, 63-year-old Darlene Phillips, was arrested after 10 p.m. on a murder charge. Her bail was set at $500,000.

"We're going straight on that she murdered Gerren by her actions," Wylie Detective Venece Perepiczka said. "This was a very unfortunate circumstance. Gerren was not taken care of well."

Police said the boy's parents are separated. The father lives in California and the mother in Oklahoma. Their names were not released.

Police said a tip to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children's hotline led to the identification of Gerren, whose story has left its mark on the hearts of thousands around the world.

Investigators said they were looking into what happened in the final days before Gerren's death. They didn't disclose where the grandmother lives.

Autopsy results are pending, but police have said there were no obvious injuries.

Wylie police had worked around the clock with the national center and the Collin County Child Abuse Task Force since last week, checking hundreds of tips to learn the boy’s identity.

An image of Gerren that the center's forensic artists created based on police photos was circulated worldwide in hopes that someone would recognize him.

On Friday, investigators also released a photograph provided by Gerren’s dad. It was taken three years ago while Gerren was in the hospital. Gerren is wearing a bright yellow shirt with the lead character from Blue’s Clues, a popular children’s show.

As news of Gerren's identity spread, relief poured through the comments on the "Wylie's Angel" Facebook page started by a Dallas woman. Malorie Martinez said her mission was simply to give Gerren a name.

"I can't even describe how much this means," Martinez, 20, said through tears.

Membership for the online group hit 44,000 and was still growing.

Martinez and Donna Valentino of Richardson have barely slept over the last week as they monitored the comments online to ensure that the messages remained positive. They also organized a candlelight vigil Thursday at East Fork Park that attracted hundreds of people who prayed for answers.

"There is a God," said Valentino after learning the boy had been identified. She said she had put in countless hours simply because "somebody had to know him."

Police said the brown-haired, brown-eyed boy was small for his age, measuring 39 inches tall and weighing just 28 pounds. He had "significant medical needs" and showed signs of having had a feeding tube. Perepiczka said Friday that Gerren wasn’t physically able to care for himself. Police believe his body had been abandoned less than 24 hours before it was found.

Gary Valentine of Lavon, who found Gerren's body while mowing on Army Corps of Engineers land, said he was relieved to learn the child had been identified.

"I was so sad for the child. I couldn't imagine somebody not wanting a baby," said Valentine, who was an EMT for years.

"No matter what, you don't throw children in brush piles."

This is such a sad, sickening story... Thankful that they discovered who he is and that he can be put to rest, but just shocked at how anyone could do this to a child, let alone a special needs child.. And in total disbelief that his grandmother is to blame...
