A moderate earthquake of M 5.0 shook much of eastern Canada and the northeastern United States today. The earthquake forced the evacuation of the Parliament building in Ottawa. Workers left for the day while the building was inspected. Buildings in Toronto were emptied. Toronto will be the meeting place of the G20 summit this weekend. This is believed to be the largest earthquake in the region since an M 6.1 in 1935. Damage was reported from Graceland, Quebec and surrounding communities. Trains were interrupted and a portion of route 307 east of Quebec has been closed after it had collapsed. Structural damage was also reported to buildings in Gatineau, Quebec and to three Ottawa schools. Windows shattered in Ottawa's Rideau Centre shopping Mall and the First Avenue Public School was closed because of cracks. A portion of a bridge in Bowman, Quebec near the epicenter is missing over a 50-meter stretch and traffic on Route 307 was diverted. A church in Gracefield saw the ceiling and chimney collapse in the earthquake and power was cut in some areas. The largest earthquakes in the region occurred in 1935 and in 1732 (M 6.2) southeast of this event. That event caused significant damage in Montreal. Smaller events occur several times a year in the region. The mainshock was followed by at least 20 aftershocks according to Earthquakes Canada.
Forecast 54111 had anticipated this event was likely within about 25 km of this epicenter around June 21.

This earthquake was widely felt throughout much of eastern U.S. and Canada. Light (I-II) shaking was reported as far away as Georgetown, Texas, Pittsburg, Kansas, and Earth City, Saint Louis and Saint Charles, Missouri. States reporting intensity up to III included Illinois where tremors were reported from Normal, Peoria, Pekin, Galesburg, Machesney Park, Rockford, Chicago, Yorkville, Westmont, Oak Brook, Hinsdale, Tinley Park, Lemont, Evanston, Schaumburg, Hoffman Estates, Melrose Park, Kirkland, Itasca, Elburn, Dundee, Winnetka, Buffalo Grove, Great Lakes, Waukegan, Skokie, Palatine, Round Lake, Park Ridge, North Chicago, Vernon Hills, Libertyville, Lake Villa, Lake Forest, Island Lake, Ingleside, Highland Park, Grayslake, Fox Lake, Des Plaines, Deer Field, Barrington, and Arlington Heights. In Minnesota it was felt lightly in Minneapolis and Saint Paul. Cities in Wisconsin reporting the earthquake to NEIC included Fon du Lac, La Crosse, Stevens Point, Wausau, Green Bay, De Pere, Madison, Middleton, Janesville, Milwaukee, Kenosha, Delavan, Sheboygan, Oconomowoc and Brookfield. To the south the earthquake was felt in Kentucky with intensity II-III in Glasgow, Gilbersville, Ashland, Walton, Bellevue, Newport, Maysville, Covington, Lexington, Louisville, Shepherdsville, and Bardstown and in Tennessee in Germantown and Cordova. Florida residents reported shaking in Floral City, Sebring, Avon Park, Tampa, Miami, and Jacksonville. In West Virginia the earthquake was felt with shaking up to intensity III in Morgantown, Wheeling, Huntington, Charleston. People in Virginia where I have just returned from a trek on the middle section of the Appalachian Trail also felt the quake widely. Residents from Blacksburg, Roanoke, Norfolk, Richmond, King George, Fredericksburg, Alexandria, Arlington, Vienna, Springfield, McLean, Falls Church, and Fairfax reported feeling the tremor. In Maryland the quake was felt in Annapolis, Windsor Mill, Baltimore, Rosedale, Nottingham, Towson, Linthicum Heights, Hanover, Bellcamp, Greenbelt, Fort George G. Meade, and Annapolis Junction. The quake was also felt lightly in Washington, D.C. In Delaware it was felt in Wilmington, New Castle, Newark and Hockessin,
Residents in Pennsylvania felt the quake with intensity II-III as well. In the northeast United States the quake was felt throughout the region with intensity II-V. In Connecticut it was felt in Stamford, Wilton, Danbury, New Milford, New Have, East Hartford, Windsor Locks, Windsor, Enfield, Manchester, Glastonbury and Bloomfield among other communities. In Vermont similar shaking to intensity IV was reported from Westfield, Troy, Newport, Lyndonville, Saint Johnsbury, Rochester, Middlebury, Rutland, Waterbury, Waitsfield, Stowe, Northfield, Morrisville, Johnson, Barre, Montpelier, Williston, Vergennes, Swanton, Shelburne, Saint Albans, Richmond, Milton, Jericho, Fairfax, Colchester, Burlington, Brattleboro, Randolph, and White River Junction. In Maine the quake was felt in Skowhegan, Waterville, Augusta, Oxford, New Gloucester, Portland, North Yarmouth, Yarmouth, Falmouth, Westbrook, Auburn, Kennebunk, Brunswick and Gray. A personal observation is that at the grocery store in Yarmouth, the lights flickered for several seconds during the quake.
In New Hampshire, the quake was felt with intensity II-V in North Conway, Dover, Conway, Woodsville, Lebanon, Hanover, Walpole, Charlestown, Colebrook, Keene, Concord, Nashua and Amhurst. It was also felt in Johnson, Providence, Westerly, Warwick, Cumberland and North Kingstown, Rhode Island. In Massachusetts it was lightly felt in Weston, Boston, Malden, Somerville, Cambridge, South Deerfield, Greenfield, North Adams, Pittsfield, Springfield, Westfield, Northhampton, Holyoke, Hadley, Easthampton, Chicopee, Amherst and Agawam.
In Canada the quake was felt with intensity III-V in Quebec at Acton Vale, Barrie, Ville-Marie, Val-d'Or, Trois-Rivieres, Sherbrooke, Shawville, Salaberry-de-Valleyfield, Sainte Agate des Morris, Saint Sauvier des Morris, Saint Jerome, Saint Jovite, Saint Jean sur Richelieu, Saint Hyacinthe, Saint Bruno, Quebec City, Rigaud, and Montreal, In Ontario it was felt in Barrie, Belleville, Brantford, Buckingham, Caledon, Carleton Place, Chatham, Cobourg, Cornwall, Georgetown, Guelph, Hamilton, Kanata, Kingston, Kitchener, Lindsay, London, Midland, Mississauga Beach, Milton, North Bay, Oshawa, Ottawa, Owen Sound, Perth, Peterborough, Pembroke, Saint Catharines Niagara, Saint Thomas, Sarnia, Smiths Falls, Sudbury, Toronto, and Windsor among others.

To the south the earthquake was felt in Kentucky with intensity II-III in Glasgow, Gilbersville, Ashland, Walton, Bellevue, Newport, Maysville, Covington, Lexington, Louisville, Shepherdsville, and Bardstown and in Tennessee in Germantown and Cordova. Florida residents reported shaking in Floral City, Sebring, Avon Park, Tampa, Miami, and Jacksonville. In West Virginia the earthquake was felt with shaking up to intensity III in Morgantown, Wheeling, Huntington, Charleston. People in Virginia where I have just returned from a trek on the middle section of the Appalachian Trail also felt the quake widely. Residents from Blacksburg, Roanoke, Norfolk, Richmond, King George, Fredericksburg, Alexandria, Arlington, Vienna, Springfield, McLean, Falls Church, and Fairfax reported feeling the tremor. In Maryland the quake was felt in Annapolis, Windsor Mill, Baltimore, Rosedale, Nottingham, Towson, Linthicum Heights, Hanover, Bellcamp, Greenbelt, Fort George G. Meade, and Annapolis Junction. The quake was also felt lightly in Washington, D.C. In Delaware it was felt in Wilmington, New Castle, Newark and Hockessin,
Residents in Pennsylvania felt the quake with intensity II-III as well. Major cities in that state where the quake was felt included Philadelphia, Sayre, Athens, Kingston, Wilkes Barre, Tunkhannock, Scranton, Honesdale, Bethlehem, Williamsport, Westfield, Coudersport, Wellsboro, State College, Smethport, Port Allegany, Eldred, Eiie, Waterfield, Grand, Nort East, Saegertown, Girard, Fairview, Edinborro, Corry, Warren, Titusville, Meadville, Cochranton, Hermitage, Grove City, New Castle, Butler, Johnstown, Pittsburgh, Honestead, Corapolis, Shippingport, and Sewickley. In New York intensity II-V was felt in Elmira, Watkins Glen, Scio, Painted Post, Newfield, Montour Falls, Ithaca, Horseheads, Hornell, Corning, Canisteo, Belmont, Bath, Arkport, Andover, Alfred, Salamanca, Randolph, Portville, Olean, Mayville, Little Valley, Houghton, Friendship, Franklinville, Falconer, Cuba, Bemus Point, Jamestown, Rochester, Victor, Webster, Warsaw, Spencerport, Rush, Scottsville, Pittsford, Penn Yan, Penfield, Palmyra, Ontario, Newark, Macedon, Lyons, Livonia, Honecye Falls, Bloomfield, Hilton, Henrietta, Geneva, Geneseo, Fairport, East Rochester, Dansville, Farmington, Canandaigua, Brockport, Avon, Albion, Niagara Falls, Buffalo, Tonawand, Ransomville, Orchard Park, North Tonawanda, Medina, Lockport, Lewiston, Lancaster, Hamburg, Grand Island, Gowanda, Getzville, Fredonia, East Aurora, Depew, Batavia, Attica, Arcade, Alden, Binghamton, Owego, Oneonta, Norwich, Johnson City, Endicott, Potsdam, Ogdensburg, Hogansburg, Gouverneur, Dexter, Clayton, Hampton, Canton, Fort Drum Watertown, Utica, Rome, Oneida, Hamilton, Camden, Syracuse, Oswego, Pulaski, Seneca Falls, Waterloo, Liverpool, Fulton, Fayetteville, East Syracuse, Cleveland, Cortland, Cicero, Chittenango, Central Square, Camillus, Baldwinsville, Auburn, Saranac Lake, Tupper Lake, Peru, Morrisonville, Malone, Lake Placid, Elizabethtown, Champlain, Plattsburgh, Saratoga Springs, Queensbury, Glens Falls, Kingstown, Schenectady, Albany, Latham, Gloversville, Clifton Park, Ballston Spa, Brooklyn, Astoria, Long Island, Staten Island, New York City. In New Jersey felt reports came from Princeton, Camden, Mooretown, Mount Laurel, Morristown, Summit, Hackensack, Secaucus, Springfield, Lyndhurst, Hoboken and Parsippany among others.
In the northeast United States the quake was felt throughout the region with intensity II-V. In Connecticut it was felt in Stamford, Wilton, Danbury, New Milford, New Have, East Hartford, Windsor Locks, Windsor, Enfield, Manchester, Glastonbury and Bloomfield among other communities. In Vermont similar shaking to intensity IV was reported from Westfield, Troy, Newport, Lyndonville, Saint Johnsbury, Rochester, Middlebury, Rutland, Waterbury, Waitsfield, Stowe, Northfield, Morrisville, Johnson, Barre, Montpelier, Williston, Vergennes, Swanton, Shelburne, Saint Albans, Richmond, Milton, Jericho, Fairfax, Colchester, Burlington, Brattleboro, Randolph, and White River Junction. In Maine the quake was felt in Skowhegan, Waterville, Augusta, Oxford, New Gloucester, Portland, North Yarmouth, Yarmouth, Falmouth, Westbrook, Auburn, Kennebunk, Brunswick and Gray. A personal observation is that at the grocery store in Yarmouth, the lights flickered for several seconds during the quake.
In New Hampshire, the quake was felt with intensity II-V in North Conway, Dover, Conway, Woodsville, Lebanon, Hanover, Walpole, Charlestown, Colebrook, Keene, Concord, Nashua and Amhurst. It was also felt in Johnson, Providence, Westerly, Warwick, Cumberland and North Kingstown, Rhode Island. In Massachusetts it was lightly felt in Weston, Boston, Malden, Somerville, Cambridge, South Deerfield, Greenfield, North Adams, Pittsfield, Springfield, Westfield, Northhampton, Holyoke, Hadley, Easthampton, Chicopee, Amherst and Agawam.
In Canada the quake was felt with intensity III-V in Quebec at Acton Vale, Barrie, Ville-Marie, Val-d'Or, Trois-Rivieres, Sherbrooke, Shawville, Salaberry-de-Valleyfield, Sainte Agate des Morris, Saint Sauvier des Morris, Saint Jerome, Saint Jovite, Saint Jean sur Richelieu, Saint Hyacinthe, Saint Bruno, Quebec City, Rigaud, and Montreal, In Ontario it was felt in Barrie, Belleville, Brantford, Buckingham, Caledon, Carleton Place, Chatham, Cobourg, Cornwall, Georgetown, Guelph, Hamilton, Kanata, Kingston, Kitchener, Lindsay, London, Midland, Mississauga Beach, Milton, North Bay, Oshawa, Ottawa, Owen Sound, Perth, Peterborough, Pembroke, Saint Catharines Niagara, Saint Thomas, Sarnia, Smiths Falls, Sudbury, Toronto, and Windsor among others.
