DearWife wrote:This evening has been rather interesting. I was looking at our backyard thinking I'm seeing a cat walking around in circles and pacing back and forth. My husband was saying he saw it while he was pulling in also thinking what is wrong with that cat? But I looked the more and said that's not a cat that's a dog!
So he goes out to check on it and it starts to bark at him. He comes back into the house saying yup its a dog. I give him some meat to take out to coax the dog from wherever it is so he takes it and goes back on outside. He comes back in and asks me for a flashlight. I grab it for him and this time I go out with him. I had filled up a plastic container with a bit of water but my husband said to leave the water. And he gives me a set of gloves.
We go on outside and my husband tells me to go towards the right of the house while he goes on the left side so we can somewhat corner it.
I see my husband flashing the light under the car. My husband has a stick to see if he can get the dog to move from underneath. At first the dog begins to bark. It's bark reminded me of my grandmother's Chihuahua. I'm not sure what kind of dog it is.
I give my husband a broom with a longer handle that we had laying against the house. He uses it to move the dog some more out from underneath the car. I begin to call the dog just trying to see if it would come towards me. I gave it some meat which it ate then it went back under the car. It comes out peeking its head then goes back under the tarp that is on top of the car. I call it again, in a higher voice, come here so we can see who you belong to. It kept coming out from underneath coming close to me but my husband said to not touch it. But as it comes out I tell it that we are trying to help, we need to find your family. The dog looks like it has a bit of a limp but it may have been due to the water it kept laying in. It had been storming and raining a whole lot earlier.
So tired of walking around with us trying to get it, it walks towards the front of the house. At this point I’m glad our gate is up because the dog seems to be confused. We take our positions again, and I follow it towards the front. It then goes to the porch. I'm calling my husband saying; hey it’s on the porch here! He comes out and the dog plops to sit down at the corner of the porch. My husband gently comes up to it and pets it on the back and it somewhat jumps but doesn't seem too bothered at this point. My husband tells me to stand where he is while he goes and grabs one of the cages we have.
He comes on back and he slowly comes near the dog with the cage door open. I’m trying to talk to the dog again saying, its okay we’re trying to help you. My husband comes closer and closer. He tries to get it in the cage but the dog struggles with it and then jumps up towards the side and somewhat runs back on down the stairs to the backyard again.
We then follow it once more, taking the same position. The dog goes under the car again but my husband uses the broom to push it back from underneath. It then goes towards my sister in laws vehicle, then around to ours then back to the front of the house walking. We take the same position, but the dog walks in front of the house instead of on the porch, smart dog. But my husband comes out towards the side and the dog walks on towards me. I back up a bit so the dog can come back my way and I’m hoping back towards the porch but it avoids that and comes my way. My husband told me to not let it pass me. So we both end up cornering it towards our neighbor’s gate. It could have easily walked under their gate but it didn’t and then plopped down to sit down. My husband somewhat laughs at the way the dog is acting with us.
I then said we need a chain or something. My husband said he didn’t have one but went back into the house and found a thick rope. He ties a knot then carefully places it over the dogs head. But the dog got out of the rope. I took the rope and tied it the way I would as if I was beading where it would have a loop and then would tighten but can be loose again. I give it to my husband and this time it works as the dog then tries to get out of it but can’t. The dog somewhat struggles but I’m telling it, we need to help you so we can find your family. It then calms down and I begin to pet it on the back. My husband checks to see if it is male or female. It is a male.
We then check the collar that is around its neck. So my husband holds the rope while I carefully check and we both also try getting the collar off to see if there is a name or address under it. But when we took it off there was nothing written.
My husband wants to try the cage again but I tell him he’s not going to fit. I tell him to tie him on the rail but we consider not the rail towards the front because we don’t want him to accidentally hang himself. So we tied him to the rail near the front porch door. Now he is sitting there just content. He hasn’t made a peep or anything. We put out a blanket for him to lie on and gave him some water and some beef jerky as we don’t have any dog food. He ate all of it up.
I looked out the window and he just looked at me (pic below)…he’s a cute little feller. I’m hoping his owner will come by and see him there to get him. Tomorrow we are going to report that we found him as it’s required by law in our city. We have the choice of taking him into the shelter or trying to find his owner within two weeks by all means possible, poster, ads, etc. My husband doesn’t want a dog at this time because of all the responsibility but he did say he wanted one about a week ago. But it is just so funny how it wandered into our yard like that. We have an iron gate up so I’m wondering maybe it saw one of the cats come this way and followed it or my mom suggested it might have got out of the owner’s car and could also be worth some money. I’m not sure what kind of dog he is. He’s very well behaved and larger than a Chihuahua.
I’ve been trying to locate some online lost and found websites and I checked craigslist but no such luck. I’ll try some more tonight. I really like this dog. Last dog we had was when I was a little girl, it was a German Sheppard named Duchess but that was my mom’s dog. We baby sat other dogs but that was pretty much it. If we can’t find the owner or nobody claims him, I’m hoping and praying that my husband will change his mind on having a dog.
Here are some pics I took of him tonight (not able to embed the slide show so here's the direct link):
Lost Dog - 3 pics
If someone can help me identify what kind of dog this is it would be greatly appreciated.
God Bless

DearWife - I am not sure what type of dog he is, but he is cute and God Bless you and your husband for helping the little guy. I have a friend living in Sacramento who called me Tuesday night and said to expect a big quake in Japan (which just happened). She called again tonight, about 6:00PM PST and said to expect one in SF. I hope not, but maybe this dog was sensing it and ran. He is well taken care of so someone is missing him. Keep us posted please.

Hi Polly. That did cross my mind as I was taking a look at all the lost and found pets on craigslist. His bark does sound familiar as I've heard a dog's bark like that in the neighborhood somewhere. I'll take a better picture in the morning if I can get to my camera; I took them with my cell phone so that explains why the bad quality.
My husband just blurted to me about how could the dog get into the gate unless someone pushed him through. Since he walked towards the front of the house when we were trying to catch him, you'd think he'd go back out the way he came in but that didn't happen. We'll see how it goes tomorrow. Thanks for replying

If the dog was that disoriented and scared he might have pushed through there. You did say the dog was walking in circles. Hope he will be alright out there tonight, things are getting scary all over. Stay safe!
DearWife wrote:Dog catchers came yesterday. It took them awhile to get our little visitor out from his home he made under our car. He kept dodging them left and right under the vehicles. The one lady had a pole with a loop while the other lady had a pole too till she finally cornered him and got her net. At the end they were saying how mighty he was. So we've named him Mighty. In four days (Thursday), after they register him and give him shots, have him seen by a veterinarian, and neutered (if he isn't already) he will be put up for adoption if he doesn't have a chip and no one claims him. If he does have a chip and they locate the owner, they give the owner 8 days to come get him. If a no show, he will still be put up for adoption. My husband has us on the list to be the first ones they contact if no one picks him up.

Thanks Polly . Something how all this came about. Well, tomorrow is the big day, everything goes well. I'm a little nervous though.
