HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. (AP) - A day of high surf in California forced the shutdown of parts of Pacific Coast Highway in Orange County and damaged the Ocean Beach Pier in San Diego.
Huntington Beach Police Lt. Mike Reynolds says water flooded all lanes of the PCH at Bolsa Chica State Beach on Sunday, and sand and debris left behind forced the shutdown of southbound lanes. A
similar tide moments later forced a similar shutdown in Sunset Beach. Most lanes were reopened a few hours later.
In San Diego, lifeguards shut down the Ocean Beach Pier when waves tore a 100-foot section of its railing. It was not immediately clear how long the closure would last.

The high tides were unrelated to a smaller surge a day earlier due to a Tsunami generated by the massive earthquake in Chile.
