I'm not as educated in earthquake science, lore or history as many of you here, but I am stunned by events in Chile. After a major quake, aftershocks are to be expected. But this many huge shakes that could qualify as significant quakes on their own? And not just four or eight. Dozens! Two of them 6+ just today.

How much stress does this fault have to release? Is it possible that all the quakes that have happened so far are actually pre-shocks?

And while we're getting nervous, Taipei rocked and rolled late today (probably tomorrow for them as they're on the other side of the international date line), which pretty much leaves North and Central America as the only legs of the Ring of Fire that haven't been tossed around much lately. Activity from Colombia on north has been anemic.

I hope it stays that way.
