My son-in-law likes to get his digs in on me by trying to make my grandkids call me granny but they are smarter than him and know the correct term in the south is "mammaw"...(okay meemaw is okay but we prefer mammaw)...
yes! dear ~grits~ i know many mamaw's and meemaw's ...i have my own granmaw...on mama's side.
in the mountains...granny is what we are blessed to be named by our grandkids ~giggle~
only the folk whom knew my granny understand why i delight in that title.
'granny' is a title of deep respect....amongst the mountain folk.
in the piedmont where i dwell...no one is named as granny...they are g-maw,
grimmy, nanny, mams, mamaw, meemaw, meemee, grandmother__________{whatever name, such as ruby)
any ole way...all of these are titles of deep love and respect.
if'n we all still lifed the old ways....we would be proud of our titles.
spiritually..we are these noble titles.
my grandkids dubbed my husband as 'POPBEAR'.
i think, it is acause when grand daughter was born....he had very long red hair...all the way to his waist, as well as a beard so red
) like a bear he appeared ~giggle~
he has since cut his long hair and beard...so now they call him popbear....and sometimes pop
)
so they are blessed with a granny dove....nanny rabbit (their daddy's mom) and a popbear
)
the only other grandfather they know, is my first husband, the father of 3 of my children...including their mama...they call him 'mister custer'.
even tho i have explained all of this to them...they won't 'git it' til they are middle aged.
delight in the children of our life we should...yet...we are teaching them their birthright.
we were not aware of this ...because our fathers forgot the face of their fathers.
and at times our mothers despised the face of their mothers.
and so life moves on....
to a place our grandchildren shall take it unto
bless our grandchildren i do!
may our children remember our faces!
and delve into the love and wisdom we gifted them.
