    Wired Tree talks on Twitter

    The tree that tweets

Network equipment maker Ericsson has showcased the world's first tweeting tree at the Mobile World Congress conference in Barcelona.

The chest-high potted orange tree has been wired up with sensors and lights so that it can respond to people walking past or stroking its leaves.

"The tree is connected to a device that turns the tree into an electromagnetic field sensor, enabling it to detect motion," according to Ericsson's web page featuring the "Twittering Tree".

When the Twittering Tree is approached, its sensor transmits information about movement and the changes in its electromagnetic field to a nearby laptop processor, which activates the appropriate pre-programmed response.

As people pass by, it sends Tweets that reflect its mood directly to its Twitter account, expressing “emotions” such as loneliness, if someone moves away.

It has its own Twitter account (ConnectedTree), can rattle off a range of spoken responses, flash its lights and play music to passersby.

Ericsson promises its not some guy with a laptop hiding behind a bush tapping out tweets and greets. The tree is connected to a notebook running an "analysis engine", which determines the correct response for a given situation.

The ConnectedTree will post a comment on Twitter depending on how people are interacting with it. Initially, its posts were mostly about how many people touched it, such as "172 touches in an hour. Can an orange tree get swine flu?".

This, however, gave way to more fortune-cookie Zen, with comments such as "To forgive is the highest, most beautiful form of love. In return, you will receive untold peace and happiness" and "Be happy. It's one way of being wise".

More creepily, it can also send an SMS to your mobile if you touched it. At least it will be the first time you've been stalked by a tree.

Ericsson estimates there will be 50 billion connected devices by 2020. Logging on to your Twitter account may take on a whole new meaning.

I hope to heck "they" don't add that SMS reply to my mobile phone feature when you pass a sensor near the MiniMart entrance. I get far too many notification text messages from my phone company now! 'Suspect' I think it's a ploy to increase your phone bills!
